Towards a perceptual quality metric for computer-generated images
نویسندگان
چکیده
The physical validation of computer-generated images (CGIs) has received a lot of attention from the computer graphics community, as opposed to the assessment of these images’ psychovisual quality. The field indeed lacks the proper tools to quantify the perceptual quality of a CGI; this paper engages in the construction of such a metric. A psychovisual experiment was submitted to a representative panel of observers, where participants were asked to score the overall quality and aspects of this quality for several CGIs. An analytical quality model, fit to the data, next gives insight into the relative perceptual importances of these aspects. Accuracy in the simulation of shadows, good contrast and absence of noise were found to have a major impact on the perceived quality, rather than precise anti-aliasing and faithfull color bleeding.

Stimulus synthesis for efficient evaluation and refinement of perceptual image quality metrics
We propose a methodology for comparing and refining perceptual image quality metrics based on synthetic images that are optimized to best differentiate two candidate quality metrics. We start from an initial distorted image and iteratively search for the best/worst images in terms of one metric while constraining the value of the other to remain fixed. We then repeat this, reversing the roles o...
متن کاملAssessment of the Log-Euclidean Metric Performance in Diffusion Tensor Image Segmentation
Introduction: Appropriate definition of the distance measure between diffusion tensors has a deep impact on Diffusion Tensor Image (DTI) segmentation results. The geodesic metric is the best distance measure since it yields high-quality segmentation results. However, the important problem with the geodesic metric is a high computational cost of the algorithms based on it. The main goal of this ...
متن کاملPerceptual coders and perceptual metrics
We examine perceptual metrics and use them to evaluate the quality of still image coders. We show that meansquared-error based metrics (such as PSNR) fail to predict image quality when one compares artifacts generated by di erent types of image coders (e.g., block-based, subband, and wavelet coders). We consider three di erent types of coders: JPEG, the Safranek-Johnston perceptual subband code...
متن کاملQuality image metrics for synthetic images based on perceptual color differences
Due to the improvement of image rendering processes, and the increasing importance of quantitative comparisons among synthetic color images, it is essential to define perceptually based metrics which enable to objectively assess the visual quality of digital simulations. In response to this need, this paper proposes a new methodology for the determination of an objective image quality metric, a...
متن کاملLearning a no-reference quality metric for single-image super-resolution
Numerous single-image super-resolution algorithms have been proposed in the literature, but few studies address the problem of performance evaluation based on visual perception. While most super-resolution images are evaluated by fullreference metrics, the effectiveness is not clear and the required ground-truth images are not always available in practice. To address these problems, we conduct ...
